An
Article About Deans & Homer
Deans & Homer is a name everyone in the insurance community seems to be aware of but few are sure of the
activities of the company. Their website states that the firm has been in existence since 1856 and has been
known by the name Deans & Homer since 1942. The explanation is that it is an underwriting management
company specializing in property insurance for the companies they represent.
The company is based in San Francisco and handles all functions for the A plus rated carriers they represent;
from underwriting and production including accounting, claims, regulatory compliance and record keeping for the
policies they issue; some of the carriers have been represented for over 40 years.
Deans & Homer offers products in California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada and Arizona and self-storage
industry products nationwide. It is a commercial property driven company with no personal lines except for
renters insurance.
Kevin Gallagher is the underwriter in the Roseville office and he has a diverse background as a contractor that
helps him to understand the risks and make informed underwriting decisions. He is understandably proud of the
low loss ratios that the company posts and said that their knowledge of the territory and the policy of
cross-training one another helps to attain those favorable numbers for their clients. The local office covers
the area from Manteca to the Oregon border and from Sacramento to Nevada.
Kevin and his wife raise Newfoundland dogs and he and a fellow “Newfie” owner recently drove three Newfoundlands
to a dog show over a weekend in Chilliwack, British Columbia. Kevin reports that the young female dog that he
has high hopes for did very well in the show and it was worth the long and scenic trip.
Debbie Clark has worked for Deans & Homer for 22 years and states that it is a wonderful company to work
for. She is a native Californian and started work at Fireman’s Fund Insurance in a clerical position when she
decided that she wanted to become an underwriter. After graduating from Sacramento State University, she
worked at Zurich and was a marketing manager before finding her place at Deans & Homer.
She and her husband have raised two sons and a Golden Retriever. Debbie is a history buff and has read
much about the founding fathers; she is keen on finding new reading materials at book sales and keeps her home
bookshelves from groaning by shipping books to the troops after she has devoured them.
Her husband has a Christian ministry to deliver balloons to children in group homes and foster care from
Sacramento to Auburn on their birthdays. Debbie reports that sometimes the balloons are the only
recognition that the children receive on their special day and she and her husband are thrilled to be able to bring
some joy to the kids.
